The seating chart, drawn like your real classroomBeta

Your tables, your board, your door, and every student in their seat with their avatar: the chart looks like the room the class has in front of them. You prepare it quietly in three steps, then project it to take roll call at a glance, or to draw the new seats one by one in front of everyone.

Try it right now

This is not a screenshot: it is the tool itself, the one your class will see on the board.

How it works

  1. My room: a starting layout, then your real tables

Start from a layout — Classic, Rows, Groups of 4, U shape, Semicircle or Empty room — then drag each table with a finger and turn it. “Add tables” offers the desk, the double table, tables for 4 and 6, the round table, the trapezoid, the kidney table, the half-moon table and the gathering rug. At the kidney table, one seat is yours, and it is never given to a student.

  2. The board, the door, and the real dimensions

“Board, door and decor” places the board or the interactive screen, your desk, the door, the windows, the bookshelf, the reading corner, the sink and the cubbies. The board sets the front of the room. “Room size” adjusts width and depth, and anything placed against the back or right-hand wall moves with its wall.

  3. Seats: drag a student, or tap the student and then the seat

“Seat everyone at random” seats the whole class in one tap, and “Seat the rest” fills only the empty seats. Students without a seat wait in the “Without a seat” drawer. A flexible seat — ball, wobble stool, cushion or beanbag — can be placed on a seat, so you know who has what. Every move can be undone.

  4. In class: roll call at a glance

After “Take roll call”, tapping a desk marks the student present or absent, and their seat greys out. It is the same attendance as everywhere in Kliip: a student marked absent on the chart is also left out of the wheel, the name picker and the teams, until you mark them present again.

  5. Draw the seats, one by one, for the suspense

“Draw the seats” reveals the new arrangement in front of the class: with each tap, a seat lights up, then the student who sits there appears. “Reveal all” finishes in one go. Nothing is written until the last seat, and “Stop” leaves the chart as it was.

  6. Seen by the students, or from your desk

Projected, the chart puts the board at the top, the way the students see it: a student sitting on the left appears on the left. “View from my desk” turns it round. Each seat shows the student’s avatar on their chair and their name on the table; with names hidden, the name becomes initials and the avatar stays.

  7. Several charts, seating rules and new neighbours, with Kliip Premium

Kliip Premium adds named charts for the same class (“Test day”, “Workshops”), “Who sits where?” — never side by side, always together, at the front, and each “paired” student next to a “helper” — and “Change seats”: new neighbours, and everyone takes a turn at the front. These buttons are visible, marked, and explained on click.

When it really earns its place

Morning roll call, by looking at the room

An empty chair in the room is found on the chart at a glance: one tap on each matching desk, and roll call is done without reading a list aloud. The wheel, the name picker and the day’s teams take the absent students into account on their own.

Changing seats, without the negotiation

On the first Monday of the month, “Draw the seats” seats the class in front of everyone, one seat after another. Nobody picked anybody, and the suspense does the rest: the class watches the board instead of arguing.

The flexible classroom

A gathering rug for circle time, a kidney table for small-group work, and a ball or cushion icon placed on a seat: the chart says who sits where, and on what, this week.

One chart for the test, another for workshops

With Kliip Premium, “New chart” starts from the same room and seats the class at random; all that is left is to move a few students. The drop-down switches from one chart to another in one tap, when the activity changes.

What it does, and what it does not

“Who sits where?” rules carry no reason, and there is no text field to write one: “at the front” is often about sight, hearing or attention, and a “why” field would end up holding health information. These rules never show on the “In class” screen; when one cannot be followed, it only says how many, without naming anyone.

For now, the chart cannot be printed or exported as a PNG or a PDF. It does not feed the other tools either: you cannot draw names from within one table group, and the Teams tool does not take up the chart’s groups.

Nothing moves on its own. There is no dated rotation and no reminder, and the chart does not know your timetable: you choose which chart is shown in the drop-down, and “Change seats” only happens when you press it.

The chart is saved in this device’s browser, attached to its class. Without Kliip Premium backup, a chart prepared at home does not turn up by itself on the classroom computer; with it, only an encrypted copy leaves, which no one but you can read.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to redo the chart every morning?

No. The chart is saved as you go, in this device’s browser, attached to its class, and it reopens as you left it. An absent student keeps their seat: it greys out for the day, and it is theirs again when they are back. If you turn on Kliip Premium backup, only an encrypted copy leaves it, which no one but you can read.

How many charts can I keep per class?

The free plan keeps one chart per class, with everything needed to build it, seat the students, take roll call and draw the seats. Kliip Premium allows several, named. A subscription that ends erases no chart: those already created can still be opened, renamed and deleted.

Do the “Who sits where?” rules show in front of the class?

No. They are set in the “Seats” step, behind their own button, and apply to every chart of the class. The “In class” screen never shows them: if one could not be followed, it gives the number, without a single name.

Do the “helper” and “paired” marks appear on the chart?

No. They are set in the Students screen and only show there. With Kliip Premium, a switch in “Who sits where?” uses them to seat each “paired” student next to a “helper”, but no desk ever carries the mark.

Can names be hidden when the chart is projected?

Yes. “Hide names”, in the portal’s top bar, shrinks every name on the chart to its initials, such as “M. T.”. The avatar stays on the chair, so each student finds their seat without the class list being readable on the board.

What happens when there are not enough seats?

The count of seats and students, at the top of the “My room” and “Seats” steps, turns amber and says how many are missing. Extra students wait in the “Without a seat” drawer, and a table you add lands in the first free corner of the room.

This tool lives on the board’s canvas, next to all the others.
